And they know just which one they want…Says Firefly.
Light research shows that somewhere between 40 and 47 states in the U.S. have named official state insects. Anyone care to share which one’s do not?
Well, I know Indiana doesn’t. The kids of Indiana, however, want to change that…
Kayla, now 10 years old, led off a parade of a dozen West Lafayette pupils making their pitch for the firefly before the Senate Public Policy Committee. She quotes a Purdue entomologist who describes the firefly as “the Paul Revere of the insect world.” Pioneer farmers would see the flies glowing and take it as a signal to check their crops for pests.
Third-grader Stella Bates says naming the firefly the state insect would promote students’ interest in science as they follow the West Lafayette students’ example in researching why fireflies glow. And she reminded cost-conscious legislators it wouldn’t cost a penny.
